NJ-01: Surprise, Surprise

Guess who’s running to replace retiring Democratic Rep. Rob Andrews?

U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews is calling key local Democrats today to inform them he is planning to run for his congressional seat after months of vowing he would not. The veteran Camden County Democrat is expected to receive the full support of South Jersey Democratic leader George Norcross who according to a report on PolitickerNJ.com last week had told Andrews he would respect whatever decision he reached.

Of course, Rob Andrews repeatedly denied that he’d be running again, and bristled at the suggestion that his wife’s successful primary bid was just a stalking horse for his congressional re-entry after his Senate campaign fizzled.

The press conference will be held tomorrow morning.

  1. machine politics. I would vote for the republican simply in portest and to send a message to New Jersey dems, “Democrats are tired of party bosses picking who gets what position”, they did it with Menendez, they did it forcing Dick Cody out of the race for governor several years ago, and they’re doing it again. Hopefully Corzine will made Secretary of Commerce or Treasury and then Cody can have another shot at being governor.

And, back to voting Republican, if he won I would have sent my message, and he would have no way of holding on to such a democratic seat and would probably be unseat the next election.

  2. Ah, I have such pride for my home state…

In all seriousness, what did anyone expect.  This was obviously going to happen from day one.  This is what you get when you have a spineless Rep who is bought and paid for by George Norcross.  I feel bad for the district: despite being in Congress for 20 years, Andrews has no power, mediocre committee assignments, and zero accomplishments in his career.

Andrews was way too young to retire, and he is still waiting for his chance, praying Corzine doesn’t run next year.  Though, if it is Andrews against Dick Codey head-to-head in a north-south battle, Codey will trounce him about as bad as Frank did.

  3. This is under-handed for sure, but not sure I get the visceral reaction that many above are having.  This is legal and, as James said, not much of a surprise.

Andrews seems a notch above a total hack pick like his wife or Norcross’ brothers.

Let’s reserve our animosity for the Repubs.
